Once a major stop on the Silk Road, Bukara had become the isolated capital of a minor despot before being absorbed into the growing Russian Empire in the late nineteenth century. Today, Bukara's fabulous architecture, friendly people, and reputation as a major center for handicrafts are attracting increasing numbers of visitors.
